Brik is the service desk for students in Brussels. Together with the Dutch-speaking Universities they take care of everything concerning accommodation, mobility, city life and events. Every year they publish a student guide (in both Dutch and English, with different content) and loads of informative flyers and folders to introduce Brussels and its universities to new students.
the mission
We were selected to create a new visual language to be utilised for the next three years for their student guides. We had creative freedom and proposed to go wild, showing the real Brussels for Belgians and International students alike. We wanted to juxtapose the roughness and imperfections of a big city next to the personality and warmth you would find in a village.
the results
As is Brussels, the designing of the guides was an amazing discovery of textures, colours, illustrations and photography. We created a bunch of characters that further illustrate the content and are also something else to discover. To keep everything readable we used fixed colour combinations together with a tight layout on our most informative pages. We kept it bright and interesting by breaking up pages with flourishes of brush strokes, sticky notes, doodles and scribbles. Recalling back to our time as students we wanted the guides to be reminiscent of what many of our papers and books looked like after we finished doodling on them.
